Dr Bruno Oberle, Chair of the Global Tailings Review, and Susan Joyce, President, On Common Ground Consultants, and a member of the Review’s multidisciplinary Expert Panel, spoke today in a dedicated session at the Intergovernmental Forum (IGF)’s AGM on developing an international standard to help the mining industry improve the management of their tailings facilities.

In January 2019, a tailings dam near the town of Brumadinho in south-eastern Brazil collapsed. Mining waste — or tailings — rapidly flowed down a valley, claiming the lives of 248 people (with 22 individuals still missing) and causing widespread destruction.

Dr Bruno Oberle, Chair of the Global Tailings Review has announced the members of the Expert Panel. The role of the Panel is to support Dr Oberle in carrying out research and analysis for the review, and to assist in writing the standard and related recommendations report.

The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) today announced its governing Council of 27 member CEOs will establish an independent panel of experts to develop an international standard for tailings facilities for its member companies. The standard will be informed by a review of current global best practices in the mining industry, and beyond.
